This study was conducted to develop the curriculum which will be applied in the Armed Forces Nursing Academy from 2003 to 2006 year, by ameliorating the problems of the current curriculum and considering students¡¯ characteristics and the current change in the educational system. The curriculum was investigated thoroughly in order to intensify the function of the A.F.N.A. as a specialized purpose college. The committee of the school curriculum was formed for this study, which was continued from November, 2001 to October, 2002. First of all, the developmental trend of national and international nursing academia and the curricula of other nursing colleges were studied, and the need in the health care delivery system and the need of faculty, students, graduates, and military hospitals were investigated. Also the educational history and current curriculum of the AFNA were consulted with the expert advisors. Through the work-shop with the committees from July, 25 to July. 27, the major direction of the curricular revision and the first tentative plan were made. The second tentative plan was made through four work-shops, and it was consulted with the expert advisors. With the results of consultation and committee meetings, the final plan was decided, and it was revised again through the work-shop with all the faculty in the AFNA. To summarize the characteristics of the revised curriculum, the curriculum was focused on intensifying the major courses and nursing courses to produce excellent professional nurse officers and building the systematic curriculum for military education. It is considered to maximize students¡¯ clinical performance ability and adaptability. Secondly, the choices in liberal arts and major courses were broadened to nurture the spirit of inquiry, autonomy, and creativity. Thirdly, the precise teaching contents of military courses needed to perform as a nurse officer were decided, and the military curriculum was systemized for a 4-year program. Also, the extracurricular courses such as immersion courses were reinvestigated in order to reduce students¡¯ burden. Curriculum develops through the continuous process of revision and change. The post study on developing the theoretical contents for military nursing should be performed to improve the education of the AFNA. In this study, the curriculum in major courses and liberal arts were broadened. Therefore, the faculty in those areas should be assured, and the budget for education for present faculty should be considered.
